Conversation between Ganesha and His vahanam, Mooshika

This is a write-up from Padma, my god given niece, who has been introduced to me by a common friend, Praveen (he too is a god given ‘thammudu’ ) on my birthday in 2011. We haven’t met personally, but on our first chat itself from facebook, we have been well connected, entha deep ga vellipoyam antae, ma jeevathallo unna tragic moments discuss chesukunae antha ga. And almost in the middle of our chat, she asked me whether she could call me as ‘atthayya’. I happily agreed.  She has written this on facebook on the eve of Vinayaka Chavithi. I was really amazed by this and asked her permission to put it in my blog.

Ten days ago, she has posted this bujji Ganapathi – He was not very sure whether Paddu could offer any pooja on His birthday. His main concern was she may not prepare any prasad for Him. He was so sad.Even the day before His birthday, she told me that she was so busy the whole day with meetings and get-togethers and was not sure what she could do. So Ganapathi was still in a dilemma. You could clearly see that in His face. Ayyo papam bujji Ganapathi. But things turned out differently to the astonishment of Ganapathi too.

Zumba classes ….

Attended my first Zumba class yesterday.

First time, a few months ago, I heard about this from Sekhar when he had seen many ladies engaged in this program in the Gym where he does his workouts. Then he told about her cousin who is actively engaged in this program. I too felt that I should give it a try. Obviously I want to loose some weight and moreover I want to increase my metabolism. Then in January, I started looking for classes around my place. I found many many places. Then I thought I should start this after my India trip which I was planning to go in Feb and return back in the second week of March. I even searched on google to find some classes in Hyderabad. I found a few places, but somehow I was little hesitant to try this in Hyderabad

After my return from India, again I was looking for classes and suddenly one day I found a groupon coupon – 5 classes for $35. I immediately plunged into it. But this offer is available at Peart Studio – 8th Ave between 35 th and 36th Streets which is almost 1.6 miles from my home.

Of course, I booked my first class for Friday, 20 April at 7 p.m. I reached the place around 6:45 p.m. I went to the 12th floor and the place is filled with people everywhere – like a fish market (very famous expression used in my mother tongue when a place is jam-packed with people and everyone tries to speak). My immediate instinct is return back home. But giving up is not my nature, and I feel really defeated when I don’t or can’t do the thing I wanted to do for any reason. So with a bold face, I walked through the crowd and met a coordinator and showed her my reservation slip. Then I waited in the corridor with many people for 10 more minutes until our room became available. But luckily, all the men waiting there are for another class. That gave me a huge relief. Somehow the idea of dancing in front of men is not very comfortable to me.

Then the class started. I did not have a clue of what they do. I should have watched youtube videos on Zumba class rather than watching Smitha’s Ishana (just kidding). It was really killing energy. For the first 15 to 20 min, I was sweating hell and had to drink water after every song.

I hope and wish that one day I could dance at least 50% of what my instructor did yesterday, She was a bundle of energy, She was fabulous. And I walked 4 miles (round trip) My knees were hurting very badly. I am afraid of going to my yoga class today. But I am a FIGHTER – I was able to do my yoga class without any problem and of course walked again 4+ miles.

I remembered two movies after my class is finished.

One is Santhosham – when Sunil says to Prabu Dev – “Bodylo rhythm ledu”  and the second one is Ele Cheppanu – Brahmi in the gym – to show off he does all sorts of workouts and was unable to move his body later.

That is exactly how I am feeling after yesterday’s experience.

Anyways, I do not give up until I break something. After I finish my 5 classes, I must change the venue, should check the ones near my home. Feeling great and hope I stay as fit as I am today to be engaged in many more of these activities in the coming days, years  – exploring the opportunities ….my husband must be always wondering what I would be up to every moment … and I hope he must be happy and proud that I have been engaging myself in all healthy activities – both physical and mental !

Visited Pittsburgh during Labor day weekend

Arya, Prashanthi, Chaitanya, Chaitanya’s mom and I went to Pittsburgh during the Labor day weekend. We have started from Bayonne around 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, 3 September. We ate iddlis and kobbari pachhadi around 8:30 a.m. in the car itself. The roads were traffic free. Since we were going to Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh, we wanted our bodies, hearts and spirits to be very spiritual, we listened to Vishnu Sahasranamam and Annamacharya keethanalu through out our drive to Pittsburgh. Prashanthi and Chaitanya wanted to join in Srivari Kalyana Utsavam which was scheduled to be performed at 2:30 p.m. Chaitanya has booked in The Hyatt in the downtown as he could not get any hotels near the temple. We reached the temple around 12:15, but we wanted to check-in at the hotel and freshen up first before we go to the temple. So we reached the temple around 2 p.m., of course there was no parking available near the temple, so we were dropped at the temple and then Chaitanya parked the vehicle in a mall directed by the temple volunteers and reached the temple by a bus arranged by the temple.

We had a nice experience during the Kalyana Utsavam and Chaitanya felt like spending some more time at the temple. So we decided to come back to the temple again for Ekantha Seva. We visited Radha and Hemchand garu. We had dinner at their place, spent some time with them (Arya had his first Jeep ride on Suhruth’s jeep) and came back to the hotel and dropped Arya and his grand ma (as she was tired by that time – long journey in the car etc.,). Three of us went back to the temple. There was some homam going on and we had vedi vedi chakkara pongali. Love it. We were there until they let Lord Venkateswara to rest for the day and decided to come back to temple for Suprabatham. Returned to the hotel and I read my husband’s crisp and inspirational speech (nth time) at the temple’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Want to read the speech – Speech at Pittsburgh Venkateswara Temple 20th anniversay and got little emotional and thanked God for giving him such an opportunity and blessing.

My emotional journey continued as we went to the temple for Suprabatham and had the good fortune to sit in the garba gudi – just in front of Lord Venkateswara and look at him through out the pooja and then came out and sat outside. but again directly in front of the God through out Sahasranamarchana. It was an awesome experience and would relate it in another post. Again we had yummy yummy vedi vedi daddojanam. Then we visited Sai Baba’s temple which is 4 to 5 miles away from Sri Venkateswara Temple. We went to Udupi restaurant for lunch and really enjoyed the food there. Returned back to the hotel after the lunch and packed and checked-out from the hotel. Prashanthi bought a small chocolate cake to celebrate Arya’s 7th month birthday. As I am writing this, it is another coincidence of 7 (7 kondala vadu) and also the room in The Hyatt Hotel was also on the 7th floor. He cut the cake on the boardwalk of North Shore river and we had some nice pictures taken. We started back around 3 p.m. and with a small 20 minute coffee break we reached Bayonne area around 8:45 p.m. On our way back, we had good discussions about the great poet Annamayya and also the movie Annamayya, itunes and some dirty Indian politics etc. Since I wanted to return back to my place that night (I am childishly stubborn when it comes to the issue of going back to my place), poor Chaitanya had to drive to Manhattan with a hectic traffice at Holland Tunnel to drop me off at my place. On the whole, it was a very emotional journey….

Want to check my Picasa album to have a glimpse of our journey

Guravayanam by Dr. Gurava Reddy

Dr. Gurava Reddy – I haven’t heard this name until recently. In the first or second week of June 2011, I was looking for some videos at http://www.youtube.com/maatv. Suddenly I came across this video – Pellipusthkam hosted by renowned danseuse Swathi Somnath whom I saw a few times in the judge seat for ‘Antharmukam’ program on Maa Tv hosted by Yandamoori Veerendranath. Somehow I am very much attracted to her – may be her smile, the way she talks, the pedda bottu, everything about her. So I watched that episode (may be that is the first episode in this series). Of course, I was very much impressed by Dr.Gurava Reddy couple – their simplicity, honesty, their experiences, their independent nature, his sense of humour – everything except for one small thing, he suddenly tried to mention about a song in ‘Badrinath’ (he hasn’t talked much about it, mentioned that they both liked one song from that movie without any connection to whatever he was talking until then), somehow I felt like commercializing the movie (anyways, I’ll leave it at that point).

If anyone is interested to watch that video, here is the youtube link –

Within a few weeks, I saw him again at NATS Telugu Sambaralu. Then I came to know that he is my vadina’s class mate or junior, but she knows him well. During those 3 day events, I attended one side event supposed to be an event related to Mullapudi Venkata Ramana – the great wtiter who is very well known for his hilarious style of writing and we can never forget his Budugu. I’ll definitely write about Budugu in my future blogs.

During that event ‘Guravayanam’ – the book written by Dr. Gurava Reddy has been released and few people talked about him and he also spoke for a while. I was very much impressed by his sense of humor. Immediately I bought 3 books. Literally I laughed loud while I was reading that book. It is a must read book for any one who has an interest in reading. This book is simply ‘Gurthukosthunnai, gurthukosthunnai’ – we would definitely go back into our childhood, college days, ala, al eto vellipoyindi manasu.

I’ll try to post some excerpts from his book in my future blogs. (I promise). I hope I do not violate any copyrights.

He is an Orthopedic surgeon – knee, hip, Joints Surgeon and CEO of Sunshine Hospitals, Hyderabad.

The way he is coming into my life – like a thufan – initially with the video, then prathkshyamga sakshatakaram ittchi, then through his book, inka ela ela kalusthano …

According to Prashanthi – (Guravayanam – Adbhutham) గురవాయణం ఒక అద్భుతం

What next ….

I am really scared now that finally one day (in the near future) may be I’ll end up as his patient. Oh No….

My first ever Manicure and Pedicure (M&P) at a professional saloon

I had my first Manicure and Pedicure at a professional saloon in Manhattan last week, two days after my birthday. Actually that is one of my birthday gifts from my niece Madhuri. The whole experience was quite exciting.

Madhuri has stayed with me almost six months. I am not sure whether I had made any impact on her, but she certainly had done on me. In my considerably long life, I hadn’t had strong memories of having nail polish, may be when I was a kid, that’s it. And I had (had ani enduku antunnanu antae, ippudu cheyyatamledu andukani) a very very bad habit – nail biting, when I was in tension, especially when I was struggling with any problems – be either at office or home or to that matter any where naa nails pani ayyipoyalasindhae. Papam naa nails …

I was so embarrassed to show my forehands to anyone, my palms are so soft but for my fingers and for my nails. Since Madhuri came to New York, she was on my back for makeup and manicure and pedicure (m & p)… I was just ignoring her. One day I was in Macy’s and overheard the conversation between two cashiers about nail polish – saramsam emitantae nail polish prevents nail biting. idi ado baganae undi try cheyyali ankuni finally I yielded to Madhuri for m & p. I had my first m & P done by Madhuri at home. And since then every week to ten days I was sitting before her for my m & p. And she has some standards for quality stuff. She buys only OPI nail polish or Sephora’s. And slowly I have become more aggressive and violent and started experimenting with some weird colors. When I told this to Unnu, she asked me to send some pictures of my hands with those weird colors. I took pictures but I did not dare to send her those as I was in a dilemma which ones are more weird – my fingers or my nails or the nail polish colors.

When I went to the salon, I was so excited as it was the first time and I was so eager to take pictures of my pedicure and manicure , mainly to put them in  my blog, but the lady was so offended and tried to hide her face asked me not to take her picture. I felt so bad and apologised her for hurting her feelings. My intention is to share the whole process.

In this process of evolution, the current stage is – three weeks ago I have ordered OPI (three fabulous colors) nail polish from Amazon.com.

Anyways that is the story of my Manicure and Pedicure.
